Gene Wakabayashi Papers
ca. 1910s to 1980s, 2 linear feet

The papers contain detailed scrapbooks (ca. 1936-1953), a theater program, a souvenir program, and an audio-taped oral history. The published material formerly in this collection was integrated into the Library Collection including very rare issues of Scene magazine, local and national Japanese American community directories, Japanese American Citizens League material, and titles on Japanese American history. Wakabayashi grew up in Tacoma, Washington; was interned at Tule Lake Relocation Center, Tulelake, California; and relocated to Chicago after the war. The highlights of this collection are the oral history and the detailed scrapbooks of newspaper clippings and other material before, during, and after internment camp. This collection consists of photographs from San Pedro, California; Rohwer Relocation Center, McGehee, Arkansas; and Chicago, Illinois. Also included are a pattern book and measuring tools used during internment camp to make clothing.

Research topics: Japanese Americans in Washington, Tule Lake Relocation Center (Tulelake, California), and Japanese Americans in Chicago.
