Izui Family Papers
ca. 1900-1965, 2 linear feet

These papers come from three members of the Izui family. Mikisaburo Izui (1882-1963) was a pharmacist in Seattle, Washington; was interned at Minidoka Relocation Center, Hunt, Idaho; and came to Chicago. He was keenly interested in botany and was an artist who painted herbs and flowers. His wife, Suzu Okamoto Izui (1880-1964), was a musician who played biwa (lute) and shamisen (three string guitar). His brother, Matakichi Izui (1886-1983), was a bachelor and chef who lived in Seattle, Washington; Los Angeles, California; Alaska; Manzanar Relocation Center, California; Seabrook, New Jersey; and Chicago. The collection includes Mikisaburo's botanical notebooks with sketches and herbal remedies, a notebook of articles he wrote for the Chicago Shimpo (a bilingual newspaper), Matakichi's scrapbook of his travels and experiences, and Suzu's biwa instruments that she brought from Japan when she emigrated. Material is in English and Japanese.
