Michael Tanimura

Michael Tanimura is currently president of the JASC board, and is a principal and co-founder of Silver Image Creative, a graphic communications firm specializing in working with education organizations and non-profits. His explorations in photography date back to the late 1960s, mostly in the documentary and "street" traditions.

A Sansei, born and raised in Chicago (and, in fact, still living in the building in which he grew up) Michael has always been a casual collector of things – not stamps and coins, but rocks and spiders and toads. He first learned photography while interning at the Chicago Academy of Sciences, and the sensibilities he acquired there were, quite understandably, those of a Victorian gentleman studying natural history.

In his photos he collects representations from the Natural World – fractional slices of time and space selected and separated from all else as a way to hold the world still long enough to get a really good look at it.
