Activities and programs for children 13 to 18 years old are offered to encourage and develop a sense of cultural identity and community. Opportunities for community service are provided, as well as the chance to meet and develop relationships with other Asian American youth.
PROGRAMS AND CLASSES
Many of the JASC's cultural programs and classes are open to school-aged children; however, parents are urged to check for age-restrictions before registering their children for classes. Of particular interest to students of this age group are taiko classes and workshops and Japanese language classes.
VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES
The JASC's special events, such as Holiday Delight and the Fuji Festival and Silent Auction, offer a number of opportunities for students to earn community service hours. In addition, students may choose to devote their holiday or break time to interacting with the seniors in the Adult Day Services program. For details on volunteer opportunities, contact Sharon Harada at 773.275.0097, x229.
STUDENT SCHOLARSHIPS
Each year, the JASC administers the awarding of at least three scholarships to promising young high school or college students who have given service to the Japanese American community. Students and/or parents need to be current members of the JASC. Applications and criteria are available from the JASC office and can also be found in the Spring issue of the JASC newsletter. Scholarship application deadline is May 1 each year.
