Founded on August 30, 1946, the Japanese American Service Committee of Chicago originally served the needs of the Issei and Nisei (Japanese immigrants and their American-born children) who left World War II internment camps to resettle in Chicago and start new lives. As the needs of the community have changed over the years, so, too, have the programs and services provided by the JASC. The JASC is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit social services agency.
Mission Statement
The mission of the Japanese American Service Committee is to preserve and raise awareness of Japanese American culture and heritage, and promote the physical and spiritual well-being of Japanese Americans and the greater multicultural community in the Midwest.
Annual Meeting
In June of each year, the Japanese American Service Committee holds its Annual Meeting. All members and their guests are invited to attend. The Board of Directors reports on accomplishments during the past year, and outlines plans for the next. Volunteers are recognized and honored for their efforts and contributions, and scholarships are awarded to deserving students.
